At Peckham Poundland

Jenny Turner

The Peckham Peace Wall was established on the morning of Tuesday 9 August by members of the Peckham Shed theatre group on temporary hoardings protecting the broken windows of Poundland on Rye Lane, between the Card Factory – a greetings-cards shop - and the entrance to the Aylesham Centre, just across the road from a clothing store called – to the delight of tweeters - Loot. All available space was filled by Friday 12 August, when the hoardings were removed and put on display at Peckham Library. But Poundland professed itself so 'touched by the community’s work' that new boards were put over the windows and the Post-its began filling up again. Here are some of the messages that were up at 5 p.m. on Saturday 13 August.

There are some religious and community leaflets too, and press cuttings, e.g. the Sun’s £50 Star Letter about Tariq Jahan: 'Riot Victim Dad So Wise.' Most flap loosely; some are laminated behind see-through plastic and sticky tape. Rosettes have been cut and stapled from plastic carrier bags: Morrisons; Tesco Metro; Lidl; the Sense charity shop; PC World; the generic corner-shop thin pale blue.

GREGGS DIDN’T DESERVE THIS!
I ♥ PECKHAM

Stop the sillyness. PLZ.

BRING BK NATIONAL SERVICE

Police and community support officers – some in body armour, some not – drop by in nervous gaggles. Many have Welsh accents: 54 officers, the BBC has reported, on loan from the Heddlu. They are chatty and solicitous – I remember this from the last time I was around the aftermath of a riot, in Brixton, 1995 – and people in general are tripping over themselves to be polite and friendly, which I remember from the last time too.

By Tuesday 16 August, when I cycled by on my way to the Post Office, these boards too had been moved to the library, and a third set was up and well under way.

I ran into one of the people behind this "peace wall" the other day. She was saying that all that politicians who have come to Peckham for photo ops in front of it - Harriet, Boris etc - have had one thing in common: they completely ignored the Shed project workers and all those little people with their post-it notes!
By the way, very near the shop called Loot is a boutique called Risky.
