Sigh. My boys love me, they do. And do they ever know what sets my tiny heart a-racing. The last two of my birthday gifts have finally come through: from A2, a gift voucher from Figleaves; from A4, a subscription to the London Review of Books.

Also, if it makes you feel better: as good as a good pair of knickers, the mark, surely, of a well-furnished closet, especially given her profession. A lot of writers fetishize their fountain pens, don't they, and these notebooks with the silly name you can get, supposedly used by Hemingway. Everyone likes a nice tool.
