Discounts for Tories

Nick Holdstock · Blackwell's Special Offer

A friend who works in my local Blackwell’s told me that Conservative Party members get a discount at the bookshop. This seemed so unlikely that I phoned the Blackwell’s helpline pretending to be a paid-up Tory, and sure enough was told that I would get 20 per cent off. Joining the Conservative Party costs £25 a year: if you spend £125 a year on books at Blackwells you essentially get your party membership for free (a less catchy offer perhaps than ‘3 for 2’). It’s unclear, though, how the Tories’ encouraging people to shop at Blackwell’s fits in with their alleged support for small shops, unless they mean the smaller branches of Blackwell’s.

One has also stained irreparably the soul.

Have to agree; I'd usually do anything for cheaper books, and the chance to support meatspace book vendors... but this time, the cost is too steep.

And to preempt anyone from giving them a whole twenty-five quid, it actually says that you can get all their benefits by becoming a "friend" of the Tory party at a minimum outlay (though the cost to your soul stays the same) of only £1.

When I tried to find out more about the benefits, by clicking the link to the so-called Affinity Programme, "the requested document was not found". Well, at least it's consistent. Conservatives. Turning Britain around!

The Affinity Programme is presently being urbanised, it will be relaunced as The Naff, 'Innit? Programme in 2011.

How much does it cost to become an enemy of the Tory Party? 2 Euros?

I know several Blackwells staff, and they are all horrified at Tories getting discounts. They're all screaming lefties.
