Greenland, Trump and the Danish documentary

James Meek

In January this year, the Danish national broadcaster, DR, released a documentary called 'Greenland's White Gold' that examined the history of a cryolite mine in Greenland and how much money it had yielded to the Danish state. The controversy surrounding the documentary ultimately resulted in it being pulled from DR's website and came at a time when President Trump's focus on acquiring Greenland for the United States put a spotlight on Greenland's relationship with Denmark.

In this film James Meek, who visited Greenland earlier this year for the London Review of Books, looks at some of the political debate stirred by the documentary among Greenlanders as they prepared for their general election in March, and considers why Donald Trump is so obsessed with owning the island.
