The Limits of Painting

Peter Campbell and Julian Bell

24 March 2010

Julian Bell and Peter Campbell have both worked as painters and written about art: Julian Bell most recently in Mirror of the World (Thames and Hudson), Peter Campbell in At... (Hyphen Press), a collection of his contributions to The London Review of Books. They talk here about things that painters can and can't do, in particular about the relationship painters have had to old art and the limits and opportunities that arise from society, its technology and its institutions.

Peter Campbell not only designed the LRB and painted its covers for many years, he is also its most prolific contributor.

Introduced by Nicholas Spice, publisher of the LRB.
