Some time in 1998 I had lunch with Bioy in his favourite restaurant, near the Recoleta cemetery. He raised the subject of his English bookseller. It was either Hatchard’s or Blackwell’s, but whichever it was he thought he should move to the other. He needed to know what I thought. I did not know. I told him about the internet but he said he was too old. I asked him if he could always find the book he was looking for among his own books at home, and he said it was hard, that his parents had left him a vast library in French and Spanish, and he himself read in English and Italian as well. In a tired and melancholy tone, he said: ‘Some people say I have the largest personal library in South America.’

]}
