Daniel Johnson is in charge of the Op Ed page of the Times; he is working on a history of German thought, which he plans to deliver to his publisher by the end of the century.

Cambridge only woke up to the great achievements of Peter Stern when he died there aged 70 in 1991. Stern’s adoptive university, to which he found himself evacuated from the LSE after arriving from Prague as a refugee from Nazi anti-Semitism, became his home for half a century; but although he taught there for many years and remained devoted to his college, St John’s, Cambridge failed adequately to recognise his stature during his lifetime.

In my review of J.P. Stern’s The Dear Purchase (LRB, 20 June) I said that Peter Stern had collaborated with Tom Stoppard on his stage versions of Schnitzler and Nestroy. Sheila Stern tells me that my memory is at fault here. Tom Stoppard remembers discussing them with Peter Stern, one of whose pupils prepared literal translations of the plays, but that was the full extent of his involvement.
