tragic life stories

Am I the last person to have noticed this subcategory in WHSmith bookshops? There must be people who head straight for it to grab the latest Cathy Glass, but it had passed me by, or I’d passed it by, until this weekend. I puzzled for a while over the upside-down face – I think it’s Billy Connolly – then went off to see what they had on the shelves under Comic Death Stories.

Not just that but also: biography and true crime? The sub-title has “true stories” which sort of works and I suspect illuminates what sort of biography you can expect.

My local Waterstones has a very small section called ‘Smart Thinking’.

I have been told that True Crime is a genre that publishers are always looking for. I guess you could combine that with Tragic Life Stories and hit the jackpot. Surely any True Crime entails a Tragic Life Story somewhere along the way.

I used to see the soft-focus-white-cover section labelled ‘Difficult Lives’. Perhaps this was confusing to Brits looking for general biography in Hungarian.
