Access Information

The different types of access supported by the London Review of Books are described below.

In order to maintain an Institution's access information, librarians are assigned an "Administrator" user name and password which allows access to the Administration page, where they can sign in to advise the London Review of Books of changes to an Institution's access information.

IP Authentication

When Institutions provide the IP addresses of the computers within their domains any user accessing the London Review of Books from a computer within this domain will automatically be logged in. If a user is successfully logged in, their institution name will display at the top each page. Specific IP addresses can also be denied access if required. The IP address you are currently using to access this page is "38.107.191.88".

Athens and Federated Access

If the Institution is a member of a federation or subscribes to the Eduserv Athens service users can access London Review of Books online either by first signing on locally or by signing on via the federated access login page. If a user is successfully logged in, their institution name will display at the top each page.

Referring URL

Any user accessing the London Review of Books from an authorised secure and/or password-protected web page will automatically be logged in. If a user is successfully logged in, their institution name will display at the top each page. The Administrator must provide the URL information to the London Review of Books in order for this type of access to be set up.

Sometimes the referring URL is not passed, for example:

• URLs that start with https://
• Some firewall/security software suppress the sending of the referring URL
• Scripts that use HTTP redirect
• Links that use JavaScript to open a new window

Library Card

Individuals may sign in using the Library card ID provided by their institution. If a user is successfully logged in, their institution name will display at the top each page. If an Institution has a library card range that is unique and contains a constant element, e.g. MK567 followed by any seven digits, the Administrator can register the library card range with the London Review of Books using the Administration page.

If the library card range is not unique or doesn't contain a constant element (for example "any ten digit number"), we can prefix the library card range with a word or code such as MK567 so that effectively, the library card range will be MK657 followed by any ten digits.

User Name and Password

Individuals may sign in using the user name and password provided by their institution. If a user is successfully logged in, their institution name will display at the top each page. The list of allowed user names and passwords must be supplied to the London Review of Books by the Administrator.

Cookies

Users must have cookies enabled to access the London Review of Books. Cookies are small files that are created on a user's computer.

• We do not use this information in any way that is personally identifying.
• We use cookies to facilitate authorised access to online content.
• We use cookies to gather online usage statistics.

The cookies used by London Review of Books:

lrb-session and lrb-remember-me: identify you to our system (and only to our system)

__utma, __utmb, __utmc, and __utmz: enable the collection of web site usage statistics

If users are unable to sign in, they may have a problem related to cookies, please check the following:

• The browser software supports cookies and the preferences are set to accept them.
• They are not using software on their computer that automatically deletes cookies.
• The date and time are set correctly on their computer.
• They are not accessing the London Review of Books via a 'proxy server' which deletes cookies automatically.
