    presumably no letters column?

  2. klhoughton says:

And in an alternative world, the David Jones reviewed by Auden in that issue grows up to perform music and art as well.

  3. Simon Wood says:

What a clacque, reviewing each other’s work. The only saving grace is Jonathan Miller, rubbishing John Updike.

  4. farthington says:

I subscribed for decades – discovered in the late 1960s when in graduate school.
The NYRB graduallly absorbed and reflected the profound disenchantment with the establishment.
Its then atypical long review essays were perennially masterly, and Levine’s caricatures legendary.
The letters column in which the cognoscenti went after each other was instructive (now replicated in the LRB).
But the NYRB has gone off. Provincialism has set in – it’s the American way or the highway.
The NYRB has been replaced in the firmament by the LRB.
We look forward (though I’ll be dead) to the LRB’s fiftieth.
