Alan Bennett’s Smut: Two Unseemly Stories is published this month by Faber and Profile. One of the unseemly stories is ‘The Greening of Mrs Donaldson’, which first appeared in the LRB. Here he is reading from it.

Comments on “Alan Bennett’s ‘Smut’”

  1. Joe Morison says:

It’s impossible, when seeing this, to believe he is really like Heathcliff. As was suggested on 31 August.

  2. Kate says:

Enjoyed Mrs Donaldson greatly. Very excited about new book. Thanks for the video – nobody can read Bennett’s stuff as good as the man himself. Love it. Can’t wait for book signings.

    Hurrah.
Best wishes, Kate – a great admirer of A.B.’s work from St Petersburg, Russia

  3. Jose Maria says:

It reminded me of that feeling as a teenager of watching a film and suddenly a slightly rude scene coming up… but much worse, this is like you’re watching it and then it’s your parents in that scene… Sorry Alan, the story in the LRB didn’t ring true, and you reading it makes it a bit more uncomfortable (for me anyhow).
