As good as a new pair of knickers

Sigh. My boys love me, they do. And do they ever know what sets my tiny heart a-racing. The last two of my birthday gifts have finally come through: from A2, a gift voucher from Figleaves; from A4, a subscription to the London Review of Books.

I wonder if any of her fans experimented with the LRB after reading that, and if they did what they made of it.
“I think we could start by approaching Billy Budd as Melville’s justification of the ways of God to man, n’est-ce pas?”
A careful selection of pages with Peter Campbell’s illustrations could be turned into tasteful pairs of paper knickers. Perhaps that was the idea.
Personally, i find the LRB comfortable and it does give me the support i need.
The LRB should take some pointers from the style: lean, trim, nubile even, yet playful.
Also, if it makes you feel better: as good as a good pair of knickers, the mark, surely, of a well-furnished closet, especially given her profession. A lot of writers fetishize their fountain pens, don’t they, and these notebooks with the silly name you can get, supposedly used by Hemingway. Everyone likes a nice tool.
Why didn’t she already have a subscription? And how did he know that?
Maybe she dropped a hint.
