    Martin says:
I was at school with JMC's son, Nicholas. On the first occasion a particular English master who was from the UK was calling out the roster, he said 'Co-et-zee' which met first with a stunned silence then gales of laughter. We were all arrogant little twerps who also mocked him for talking about PW Boh-th-uh rather than Boo(r)t-uh. The fact that we couldn't pronounce 95% of our compatriots' (misnomer, if ever there were one) names escaped us entirely. We happily pronounced 'Radebe' with an 'R' instead of 'Chadebe' as in loCH or CHania and 'Phumza' as 'Foomza' instead of 'Poomza'. And, anyway, Phumza invaribly made it much easier for us by giving us her Christian name, 'Grace' or 'Patience'.
